Abstract

Molluscum contagiosum is a fairly common skin infection in children and immunocompromised adults. It is caused by a poxvirus and causes single or multiple raised, pearl-like lesions (papules). It is highly contagious and can spread via skin-to-skin contact or contact with an infected article.Treatment modalities for Molluscum are cryosurgery, in-clinic curettage, or pulsed dye laser ablation. In early 2024, Berdazimer topical gel was approved for the topical treatment of Molluscum contagiosum. This review explores Berdazimer topical gel, 10.3% (ZELSUVMI*TM), a novel first-phase drug emerging as a potential game-changer in the treatment landscape of Molluscum contagiosum due to its unique mechanism of action as a nitric oxide (NO)-producing topical agent and its antiviral properties, which present compelling evidence of efficacy. NO is naturally produced by the human body and has various functions, including immune defence. It acts as an antimicrobial and affects apoptosis, immunomodulation, cytokine production, and inflammation. The implications of this article extend beyond clinical practice, influencing future research and prevention strategies. By accentuating the pivotal role of Berdazimer in Molluscum contagiosum treatment, this review aims to propel the discussion and review on the use of innovative therapies and their transformative impact on dermatological care.
